Last night past pupil Michael Petrov (2009) won the Guildhall School of Music and Drama’s Gold Medal award at the Barbican with his performance of Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No 1.

Whilst at the Menuhin School Michael studied cello with Thomas Carroll and since then has been studying with Guildhall’s Head of Strings Louise Hopkins who herself was a member of staff at the School.

Other Menuhin School alumni who have won this prestigious award are:

Tasmin Little (1986), Kathy Gowers (1992) and David Cohen (2002)

Tasmin Little was on the jury last night along with Ivan Hewett, Jonathan Vaughan and Dominic Wheeler.

It was also very gratifying to see past pupil and one of Michael’s contemporaries Ricky Gore leading the Guildhall Symphony Orchestra.

Very well done, Michael, from everyone at YMS. We are very proud of you.
