The school accepts pupils in Year 5 and 6, called the Ds, who play as full a part in the life of the school as their older counterparts. They have their own class teacher who takes them for the core subjects of English, Maths, Science and Humanities, while specialist teachers teach them Music and Art.

The Ds are day pupils only and their school day finishes at afternoon tea. Their school week ends on Friday afternoon, unlike the rest of the school which has music classes and other activities on Saturday mornings.

Although the audition process is as rigorous for the Ds as for older pupils, admission to the Ds is naturally as much about musical potential as it is about achievement. Once a pupil has been accepted into the Ds, their entry into the senior school is automatic and no further audition is necessary.
