Composition was introduced as a first-study subject in September 2023, and the course has been designed such that pupils are able to hone their skills whilst working closely and collaboratively with their peers.
Each first-study composer works weekly with their assigned teacher, and has access to an array of supplemental classes, including seminars which focus on in-depth repertoire study, techniques classes that explore diverse compositional styles and techniques, and workshops on orchestration and conducting.
Music technology plays a central role in composition course, and every first-study composer will be expected to take up a second-study instrument in order to nurture a deep understanding of practical music-making.
Working in an environment full of highly talented young performers, there is ample opportunity for frequent peer-to-peer collaboration and regular performance slots for pupil compositions. Masterclasses and workshops with visiting composers, and annual projects which include writing for instruments not taught at YMS, are also key components of the curriculum.
